Cullman Co, AL – Betty C. Benefield Loses Life in Deadly Crash on US 278
Cullman Co, AL (February 14, 2025) – A tragic accident on Wednesday afternoon, February 12, in Cullman County resulted in one fatality and left two others injured. The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA) reported that the crash took place shortly before 4:00 p.m. on U.S. 278 near County 1640, approximately four miles west of Holly Pond.
Authorities confirmed that 88-year-old Betty C. Benefield was a passenger in a 2011 Chevrolet Silverado when the car was involved in a head-on collision with a 1997 Mack truck. Following the initial impact, a 2021 Ram 1500 also struck the Chevrolet. Benefield suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Chevrolet’s driver, an 88-year-old Holly Pond resident, sustained injuries and was taken to UAB Hospital for medical treatment. Emergency responders arrived quickly, providing aid and ensuring that those injured received the necessary care. Firefighters also assisted in clearing the crash site.
The accident caused major traffic disruptions, with authorities working diligently to reopen the roadway. ALEA has launched an investigation to determine the circumstances that led to the crash.
