Marion Co, AL – Shelly Coleman Killed in Tragic Head-On Crash on I-22

Marion Co, AL (December 2, 2024) – A deadly SUV crash occurred on Friday, November 29, in Marion County, claiming the life of a Texas woman. The incident took place at approximately 2:30 p.m. on Interstate 22, about one mile west of Hamilton, when a 2016 BMW X4, driven by 33-year-old Eboni Johnson from Atlanta, collided head-on with a 2014 GMC Yukon driven by 69-year-old Shelly Coleman from Laneville, Texas.

According to the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency, Coleman sustained severe injuries in the crash and was quickly transported by ambulance to the University of Alabama at Birmingham Health System hospital. Unfortunately, she passed away from her injuries the following day. A 16-year-old passenger in the BMW was also injured and taken to a local hospital for treatment.

Emergency responders, including the Marion County Fire Department, swiftly worked to remove the vehicles from the scene. Authorities managed traffic and secured the area while the investigation was underway. The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency is continuing to investigate the cause of the crash.

Our heartfelt condolences go out to Shelly Coleman’s family and friends during this difficult time.

Fatal SUV Accidents in Marion County

Marion County has seen a troubling increase in fatal SUV accidents, a pattern that mirrors a nationwide rise. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), fatal crashes rose by 6.8% in 2020, largely due to speeding, alcohol impairment, and unrestrained passengers. SUV crashes often result in more severe consequences, particularly in head-on collisions.

In the event of a fatal crash, "wrongful death" refers to a death caused by another party's negligence, such as distracted driving or driving under the influence. Families who have lost a loved one may pursue wrongful death claims for compensation, which can cover medical expenses, funeral costs, and emotional suffering. An experienced attorney can help ensure a fair settlement by navigating the complex legal processes and understanding how to build a strong case to prove liability.
