Montgomery, AL – Jerome Stone Killed in Fatal Hit-and-Run Motorcycle Crash on Yarbrough St

Montgomery, AL (November 4, 2024) – A tragic hit-and-run motorcycle crash occurred on November 3 in Montgomery, claiming the life of 33-year-old Jerome Stone. The incident, reported by the Montgomery Police Department, took place at approximately 5:55 p.m. in the 1700 block of Yarbrough Street. Authorities have confirmed the victim’s identity as Jerome Stone, a longtime resident of Montgomery.

According to investigators, Stone was riding his motorcycle when he was hit by another car. The impact caused Stone to lose control, and he was subsequently thrown from his bike. The driver of the car, whose identity remains unknown, fled the scene shortly after the crash, leaving Stone severely injured on the road.

Emergency responders, including fire medics and police officers, were immediately dispatched to the scene of the crash. Despite their quick arrival and efforts to stabilize Stone, he was pronounced dead at the scene due to the catastrophic nature of his injuries.

Firefighters assisted in the extraction of the motorbike and helped secure the area to prevent further accidents, as authorities worked to clear the wreckage. Traffic on Yarbrough St was temporarily diverted while the investigation was underway, and the area was carefully examined for evidence.

The Montgomery Police Department’s Accident Investigation Unit is diligently working to locate the driver responsible for the fatal hit-and-run. Lt. David Wise of the Montgomery Police Department confirmed that no further information about the suspect or the car involved has been released at this time, but the investigation remains ongoing.

This heartbreaking loss has left the local community in mourning, with many remembering Jerome Stone as a kind and hardworking individual. Our deepest condolences go out to his family and loved ones during this incredibly overwhelming time. We hope they find strength and comfort as the investigation continues, and justice is sought for this senseless tragedy.

Fatal Motorcycle Accidents and Wrongful Death Claims in Montgomery

Motorcycle accidents continue to be a significant concern in Montgomery, Alabama, with the potential for devastating outcomes. According to the Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT), over 100 motorcyclists were killed in crashes across the state in 2022, and Montgomery County consistently ranks among the highest for motorcycle-related fatalities in the state. The risks faced by motorcyclists are higher due to their vulnerability in collisions, as they are less protected than drivers of passenger vehicles. In Montgomery, the number of motorcycle fatalities has steadily increased in recent years, especially as the city’s population grows and traffic congestion worsens.

Common causes of fatal motorcycle accidents in Montgomery include speeding, impaired driving, and failure to yield at intersections. The combination of high-speed crashes and the lack of physical protection for riders makes motorcycle accidents particularly deadly. As traffic fatalities in Alabama rise overall, with over 1,200 lives lost in 2022 alone, the need for heightened awareness, better road safety measures, and stronger enforcement of traffic laws has never been more critical.

In cases of fatal accidents, such as hit-and-run incidents, the surviving family members or the estate of the deceased may pursue a wrongful death claim. A wrongful death claim is a legal action brought against the responsible party, seeking compensation for the loss of a loved one due to the negligence or intentional actions of another. In Alabama, wrongful death claims are typically filed by the personal representative of the deceased's estate, which may be a spouse, child, or another appointed individual.

The primary beneficiaries, such as the spouse, children, or parents, can recover damages for funeral and burial expenses, loss of companionship, and emotional distress. In cases where the responsible party’s actions were particularly reckless or malicious, such as in hit-and-run incidents, punitive damages may also be awarded.

Alabama law stipulates that a wrongful death lawsuit must be filed within two years of the deceased’s passing. This statute of limitations means it is critical for the surviving family members to act quickly to preserve evidence and ensure the case is brought before the court within the allowable timeframe. Victims of fatal accidents and their families should seek the guidance of an experienced attorney to navigate the legal process and pursue justice for their loved ones.
