Shelby Co, AL (January 13, 2025) – A devastating multi-vehicle collision occurred on Saturday, January 11, on Interstate 65 NB near mile marker 245 in Pelham, resulting in two fatalities and leaving another person with life-threatening injuries. The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA) confirmed the incident, which unfolded around 8:26 p.m. when a driver reportedly tried to evade law enforcement.
According to ALEA, 21-year-old Elias Trejo Andino from Homewood was attempting to flee from officers of the Alabaster Police Department, the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office, and ALEA troopers when his car collided with another car driven by 22-year-old Tyrek Howard of Helena. Both cars veered off the road, with Andino’s vehicle flipping over after hitting several trees. Both drivers were thrown from their cars. Sadly, both Andino and Howard were declared dead at the scene.
The passenger in Howard’s vehicle, 21-year-old Jazmine A. Davis from Montevallo, sustained severe injuries. Firefighters had to rescue her from the wreckage, and she was rushed to UAB Hospital by ambulance for immediate medical care.
First responders, including police, firefighters, and paramedics, quickly arrived to secure the area, divert traffic, and clear the debris. Authorities are continuing to investigate the details surrounding this tragic accident.
We extend our heartfelt condolences to the families and friends of Elias Trejo Andino and Tyrek Howard during this difficult time. We also wish a speedy and full recovery to Jazmine A. Davis as she faces the challenges ahead.
