Tuscaloosa Co, AL - Head-On Car Crash Claims One Life on Hwy 171
Tuscaloosa Co, AL (November 24, 2024) – A tragic car accident on Saturday afternoon resulted in the death of an 80-year-old woman from Childersburg. The incident took place around 2:30 p.m. on Hwy 171, roughly 16 miles north of Tuscaloosa.
According to the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA), the collision involved a head-on crash between a 2024 Nissan Rogue and a 2006 Ford F-150. Barbara J. Kornegay, a passenger in the Nissan Rogue, was sadly pronounced dead at the scene by emergency responders. Two other passengers in the Nissan—81-year-old Frederick Kornegay, also from Childersburg, and 87-year-old Anne N. Churchwell of Sylacauga—suffered injuries and were transported to DCH Regional Medical Center for medical care.
The driver of the Ford F-150, 71-year-old James M. Hollingsworth of Kennedy, was assessed at the scene but declined to seek additional medical attention.
Tuscaloosa Fire and Rescue personnel were called to the scene to assist with rescuing individuals from the vehicles and securing the area. ALEA troopers managed traffic while investigating the crash, ensuring minimal disruptions. By 6:00 p.m., the roadway had been cleared and reopened.
Our thoughts are with the family and loved ones of Barbara J. Kornegay as they cope with this heartbreaking loss. May they find comfort and strength during this difficult time.
Fatal Car Accidents in Tuscaloosa County: A Growing Concern
Fatal car accidents continue to be a major issue in Tuscaloosa County and across Alabama. In 2022, the state saw 907 fatal crashes, resulting in 986 deaths, with more than half occurring at night. Alarmingly, 57% of those killed in accidents where seat belts were available were not wearing them, highlighting the critical importance of safe driving practices.
When a fatal accident is caused by someone else's negligence, surviving family members can file a wrongful death claim. In Alabama, these claims often arise from reckless actions such as speeding or driving under the influence. The personal representative of the deceased’s estate typically files the claim, seeking compensation for funeral costs, lost income, and emotional distress.
A wrongful death attorney can be crucial in helping families navigate the complex legal process. They ensure that the family receives fair compensation for their loss by gathering evidence, assessing the case, and negotiating with insurance companies to secure a settlement that fully addresses financial and emotional damages.
